Diamond was the first hamster I ever had. When I got her, I didn't know anything about hamsters or their care. After having her for a few months I learned that she actually needed far more than what I was giving her. I begged my parents to let me upgrade her to a better cage, but the answer was always the same: I could do whatever I wanted, but I was the one who had to pay for it. This would have been fine, but I was ten years old at the time. Not even close to old enough to have any sort of money to afford proper care.
Stories like this are unfortunately far too common in this community, especially as care standards rise higher and higher alongside prices.
Here's where my project comes in.
Diamond's Legacy is here to say no more neglected hamsters. It's goal is to help people provide proper care without the crushing costs. It's here to prevent what happened to that first little hamster I had from happening to other hamsters.
There are two ways that it will help:
- Rescuing and rehoming hamsters in poor situations on sites like Kijiji
- Upgrading care for a family's current hamster
I still have a lot of work to do (opening my shop for funding, finishing a website and social media accounts, advertising in my community, etc) but a lot of the initial planning work is done!! The goal is to launch it by Christmas, especially since so many hamsters will be purchased around that time.
I figured it would be neat to track my progress and keep you guys updated here! If you have any questions about it, please ask away
