I've seen this on forums for other rodents, and I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread of items which are marketed as safe for hamsters, but are actually dangerous or unethical. This way, we can share our knowledge and avoid making the same mistakes. Edit: If you can, please share a safe alternative to using the unsafe item.
I'm pretty tight on time at the moment, so if someone would care to start us off by explaining why hamster balls are unsafe I'd be very grateful (we don't actually have an explanation of why they're unsafe on the forum ).
Edit: we actually do have an explanation from HamstersAreMyLife : "Never use a hamster ball to give your hamster “Out of the cage time” as they have very poor ventilation, are almost never big enough for your hamster, make it even harder for your hamster to see, and your hamster can get their feet and toes stuck in the “ventilation slits”.
Play pens are great options for playing with your hamster, as well as free roaming.
If you choose to free roam your hamster make sure you block off any areas where your hamster could escape or where they could get stuck, and make sure to pick up anything dangerous for your hamster.
If you don’t want to free roam, and don’t want to or can’t afford to buy a play pen you can also play with your hamster in the bath tub.

Concerns: The longish fibers may jam in a hamster's cheek pouches. If the material is consumed, it may cause an intestinal blockage, much like a hair ball.
