Worried for my brother’s hamster

Post by HamstersAreMyLife »

My brother has a one and a half year old hybrid dwarf and he has semi decent care, but his environment isn’t great.
He lives in constant noise with very loud guitar, and he has strong fragrances in his room. It’s also pretty cold in there.
What are the long term issues that can be caused by this, and do I need to worry?

The fragrances could be bothersome to the the hamster for sure but how cold? Do you have a thermometer in there? Anything below 59 degrees is dangerous and can kill the hamster.

Not cold enough to kill, but typically 66 degrees.

66F is still room temp, even if it's on the cooler side, and I find that hybrids are more sensitive to heat than I am but less sensitive to cold. 66 should be comfortable for them. I would keep an eye on the temperature when winter hits to make sure it doesn't get too low (it's best not to go below 62, although 65 is probably more comfortable). You can give him toilet paper to fluff out his nest.

The noise and fragrances aren't ideal, but you might not have control over that since it's your brother's hamster. I would be more concerned about fragrance particles that are dispersed into the air by spraying a liquid or with an ultrasonic diffuser, rather than just the scent itself (which can be irritating, but at least the hamster wouldn't be breathing in chemical particles).

I would get a room thermometer just so you can keep an eye on it. Like this:

If possible to suggest he live in another room, that would be nice but since it's not your hamster, not sure how much control you have of that. Maybe just helping your brother watch some hamster care videos (if he's open to that) might be helpful and get him interested in improving the environment.

I control the temperature for both of our rooms, but he has a big ceiling fan that's on quite a bit.
It's probably not too worrisome.
I worry about the noise the most tbh.
His hamster care knowledge is all from me, he has never watched or researched a single hamster thing. Haha
Not that that is necessarily a bad thing, I just don't know how I would introduce it! His care is pretty good, just the noise.
Even I have trouble being in there for too long. lol
