Hamster Vets in the US

Post by Kikya »

I had a tough time finding a vet around me that actually have experience with hamsters or even take hamsters as clients. FYI, hamsters are considered "exotic" pets, not small animal, so not all vets who are "small animal" vets take hamsters. I probably called over 20 clinics, some of them said they would take hamsters but I didn't feel confident that they had the enough experience to put them on the list.

I'm going to try to compile a list of vets in the US by state. I hope this will be a helpful resource and if you have a good vet that you know provided your hamster with good care, PM me, I'll add it to the list with credit to you or if you would prefer to remain anonymous, just let me know!

All States
I also didn't find this to be the greatest resource in my area but the vet at the hospital recommended these lists to me
Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (might also be helpful for other states)
https://aemv.site-ym.com/search/custom.asp?id=5188

and this even though it's for birds has a search for exotic mammals

Thank you for doing this! Such a good idea. the only one that I know of and use in Minnesota where I live is Foley Boulevard Animal Hospital. They saw Sweetie and took care of her abscess and they clipped Willow's Nails. They also see dogs and cats and a bunch of other animals if you want to look at the website. I'm hoping to get a health check by then too.

These are two veterinary clinics in Minnesota that I have personal experience with. The one in St. Joseph is a lot smaller and unable to do things like surgeries on hamsters, but they can do more simple procedures (for example, I got a fine needle aspiration done there on one of my hamsters). They have a couple other locations as well, but I haven’t been to those ones. The Golden Valley clinic definitely has more resources available, though that’s a given considering it’s by the Twin Cities and in a much more populated area. They are able to do surgeries on hamsters there.

There is also this one in Michigan! Though it is so hard to get an appointment as they also care for dogs and cats (and it's kinda far away from me) but have good reviews for hamster visits.
