Higgens sunburst

Is Higgens Sunburst an okay food? What other brands do you recommend? Are there any brands I should avoid?

i will admit i don’t know a lot about diet but i’ve seen higgens sunburst + mazuri rat and mouse diet commonly recommended as pretty much the only decent mix that you could find in a pet store. if i recall correctly higgens doesn’t have enough protein in itself, so that’s where mazuri comes in as a supplement. i used to feed my hamsters chubbyhamstercheeks on etsy’s mixes, with a little bit of mazuri.

i would recommend looking into small businesses that make hamster seed mix. look at the ingredients, make sure they’re safe, and research nutrition requirements for hamsters and ensure whatever mix you decide on is meeting that. i find small businesses (such as chubbyhamstercheeks, but i’m sure there are others) generally have more quality products, though of course there are exceptions. avoid any food (minus higgens and mazuri) that you could find at a big commercial pet store, as they do not care about animal’s wellbeing and will cut corners to make a quick buck. (i have been out of the loop for awhile so if this has changed and some magical new brand has come to light, i’m happy to be corrected)

all in all though, higgens sunburst mixed with mazuri rat and mouse diet is perfectly fine. if that’s what you can get, get it make sure to feed your ham lots of fresh fruits and veggies, but that goes for any seed mix!
