They are the same thing but the compressed is dehyrated so you do have to add water back into it. Then it expands and becomes more loose.

I mostly use the loose because it's easier for me to handle but the compressed is cheaper. I would use distilled water to rehydrate it though to lessen the bacteria being introduced and then I rotate it with my hands ever few days so the moisture doesn't get trapped in one spot of the the dig box. Then when it dries out, I will use a spray bottle of distilled water to dampen it but not soak it.
