Do any of your local shops do this?

Post by Kikya »

I was in a Petco today and they were selling Chinese hamsters in pairs and threes. I cringed seeing this and even worse when I heard a local employee tell someone that they were "bonded" and could be paired together. Chinese hamsters, like Syrians, live solitary adult lives. So I think it's unlikely they would be happy in a small cage together long term.

To be clear I'm not 100% against pairings of some dwarf species but I do believe you need an experienced keeper to know when to separate if things get rough and to have the space if you need to separate them.

Thankfully, the other stores like PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus had all of theirs separate.

Has anyone here had a different experience with Chinese hamsters?

My local pet store in the UK sells chinese hamsters in pairs. I strongly doubt they're telling customers that hamster pairs/groups of any species need to be watched carefully for signs of declanning or fighting. The conditions they keep their hamsters in makes Pets At Home look ok in comparison...

My Chinese hamster was housed with like 20 others at Petland. Especially since she is female and the females seem to be more aggressive to each other than the males. I think the reason why so many people think they can be housed together is often people hear dwarf hamsters can be housed together, and some people believe Chinese hamsters to be dwarfs so they think the statement includes them.

My petstores don't sell chinese hamsters at all. But they do sell mice in 20 gallon long cages with 20+ other mice in them as well. I counted once and there was 32 mice in a 20 gallon tank.  They sell syrians and dwarfs in multiples too.
