Hi everyone! It's been a while. I got a roborovski hamster (her name is Penelope and she is 2 months old) about a week and a half ago and I have a few questions since this is not a species I have experience with. Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, I wasn't sure.
She loves her wheel more than anything else but she runs so fast on it that I am a bit worried. Sometimes when she stops she will do a flip and one time I even saw her flip out of her wheel. She is never bothered by it and just keeps going, but I am concerned that she could get hurt. The wheel she has is a 9 inch Silent Runner. How can I stop this? I was thinking that maybe I should line the wheel with cork, do you think that could help?
I know that she probably isn't going to be a very snuggly hamster, but I was wondering if anyone had any tips for taming/bonding? She will sometimes take a treat from me but she mostly ignores me.
I am also curious about robo hamster diets. I have read that they rarely eat vegetables in the wild so I don't know how often to feed her vegetables. She has refused most of the vegetables that I have offered her so far. She seems to be a pretty picky eater and will mostly just eat sunflower seeds. Is there anything I can do to encourage her to eat other foods?
I noticed that there are some seed mixes available on Etsy that I could get in Canada but they only have Syrian and dwarf food mixes. Should I just feed her a dwarf mix? I thought that not all dwarf hamsters ate the same thing.
Thanks so much for any answers!

Re: Robo Hamster Advice?
Oh my gosh! She's adorable! She just needs some practice on the wheel, she'll learn to slow down eventually. Most of my Robos have flipped themselves at the beginning and then they learn to slow it down. You could line with cork, but they will pee on it and possible chew on it, so if it doesn't already have cork, I wouldn't worry about it. The silent runner is a great wheel for Robos. They feel so safe in it =)TinyPaws wrote: Wed Sep 03, 2025 6:52 pm Hi everyone! It's been a while. Dwarf mixes are fine for Robos, I would save some of the meal worms for taming sessions. Most robos LOVE them. Sometimes to cut down on costs, people get an etsy mix and combine it with a store mix so you get more variety but at half the cost. My robos all loved pumpkin seeds too.
Box taming is also really helpful for Robos, I feel like. It lets them feel safe but gets them used to interacting with your hand.

Re: Robo Hamster Advice?
I've only ever heard of bathtub/playpen bonding which she hated but this seems like it would be more manageable since it is in a smaller space.Kikya wrote: Thu Sep 04, 2025 9:22 amOh my gosh! I don't have any concerns about that mix. It seems appropriate for a Robo. I bet she will love it. =)TinyPaws wrote: Thu Sep 04, 2025 3:55 pmI've only ever heard of bathtub/playpen bonding which she hated but this seems like it would be more manageable since it is in a smaller space.Kikya wrote: Thu Sep 04, 2025 9:22 amOh my gosh! Robos that I have had in the past, have much more enjoyed the box taming method, since the big playpens seemed to scare them at first. Then after they were comfortable, it was easier to let them run around in a playpen and setup toys and things to run around on. Also, daily interaction is key to keeping your hamster tame!

Re: Robo Hamster Advice?
She is so cute! Robots are known to be very fast, and they often flip over on their wheel because of their speed. Like Kikya said, with time and practice she should get the hang of the wheel. She may just be a bit nervous still since you got her recently. Dwarf hamsters (especially robos) are known to be VERY timid. This is completely normal, so this why she maybe a bit shy at first. All hamsters no matter the species, don't love human interaction since they are prey animals. My Syrian hamster would run at the sight of me when I first got him, it took over a year for him to finally be comfortable with me. Some hamsters like human interaction, some don't, and it's okay either way
I would try mealworms or freeze-dried chicken to see if your hammy likes those! I have had hamsters in the past that LOVE mealworms but aren't huge on veggies. My current hamster loves any green veggie, but doesn't care too much for mealworms.
As for the diet, I am also in Canada, and I know it can be tricky to find diets here. I would love to buy a hamster diet off Etsy, however, shipping is way too much. I found the best local food is Higgins Sunburst hamster food (Can be found at Petland, and Global Pet Foods) and I put a block of Mazuri Rat and Mouse blocks (Can be found at Petsmart, or PetValu) and sometimes a couple dried meal worms (Can be found really any petstore, I get some from Petsmart in the reptile section, just make sure there is no added calcium to it)

Re: Robo Hamster Advice?
Bonding is actually going pretty well! I tried the method suggested by Kikya and she will now climb on my hand and take treats from me. She just doesn't enjoy being pet, but that ok. My passed hamster loved being held and pet so I think that I am also still getting used to having a hamster who is more active and doesn't enjoy interacting with me as much. The food I found on Etsy is from Critter Wonderland and actually has free shipping if you put in the code FREESHIPPING on orders over 45$ so I am excited to have found that and I will probably order it soon. Penelope seems to dislike dried mealworms and chickens too but I will keep trying to find more foods that she enjoys.bella33 wrote: Sun Sep 07, 2025 1:40 pm She is so cute!
