Dark color near anus?

Hi all,

I hope everyone and their hammies are well!

My beautiful Buttercup is so full of energy and I love him so much. He's still very happy and healthy and is running almost every night, eating everything still (lol), and cute, happy, and healthy. But I noticed today and yesterday that the area around his anus is kind of dark. I touched it and it's not wet (I don't think he has wet tail), and it didn't look like blood, nor was it poop. I couldn't get too good of a look because he started to fidget and very much wanted to get down.

Any ideas of what this could be without a picture? Thank you...

I'm not sure, a picture will help but I understand if he is too fidgety.

If he is running and doing everything normal, I wouldn't worry too much. It could be something he got into or just a speck of stool.

I would watch it to make sure it doesn't get worse, but for now I wouldn't worry. If it turns darker, larger or into a lump, then I would discuss further action.

Yes, he's 100% his frisky and adorable self (I love him sooooo much). I read that it could just be coloration with age... he is at least 1.5 years old (I got him in October of 2023, and I think he was around 6 months old by then).

Yep! Could be age or really just a diacoloration of skin. I wouldn't worry!

I just took a picture of what he has going on down there (you can see part of his cute face). I'm not sure if it's his testicles or something else, but I don't like the looks of this.

Update: I checked on him this morning, and BOTH testicles were enlarged...

I think he may have just been a little warm, which we in the hamster community know... ahem... enlarges testicles! Plus, I heard him running in his wheel for a while last night (I was happy to be kept up by it, lol), and he continues to eat everything in sight. He's such an angel. I'm so proud of how far he's come since I first got him. He's so friendly and absolutely LOVES pets and even hanging out with me on my bed! (Don't worry, I don't let him run away his own... he generally just likes to play and climb on my arms, hehe).

I'll keep everyone posted, though. What a relief! It's amazing how much love these beautiful creatures inspire. I was in tears last night panicking...

I noticed some of my male hamsters getting spots down there as they age. Unless you saw discharge or something, I wouldn't worry too much. Also, male hammies sometimes need some help cleaning down there as they get older so keep that in mind, if you see any crusties.
