vetriDMG can help stop some spasms

Post by hamsworth »

I had a male Syrian hamster who, at about 1 year, started having these spasms. He would walk along and then suddenly start flailing his limbs, spasming for about 2-5 seconds. Every time he had a spasm was frightening.

The exotic vet prescribed vetriDMG. It's supposed to help with neurological disease. He prescribed 0.04 ml twice a day for two weeks. My hamster never spasmed again after that. :) Note that my vet and the techs couldn't get my hamster's mouth open. That little guy just would not take medicine orally. I ended up putting a drop on top of half a chickpea with some oats underneath to soak up any excess vetriDMG.

You can order vetriDMG yourself online, but it's harder if you're outside of the US. A safe site seems to be Vetri Science, although I can't seem to order it to Canada at the moment. Your vet should be able to prescribe it.

I don't think vetriDMG will cure all spasms. I had a male dwarf hamster who had spasms, but they were more like mini strokes. He kept having them until he passed away soon after from a larger stroke (he couldn't move after it). The same vet said it was different than what he saw before. I tried vetriDMG, but it either didn't work or didn't work fast enough because he passed away in days.

You seem to have a very unusual vet, more open to trying different treatments. Did he say what he thought was affecting your Syrian?

He said these particular spasms were likely caused by a neurological disease or problem. He didn't specify any specific diseases, though.
