Meet Bean!!!

Post by CompLady »

Not going to lie, Bean was an impulse buy.

See Brisby passed away of old age in may of last year of (presumed) old age, I procrastinated a lot on breaking down his cage and getting that packed away. I wanted another hamster, but I wanted to wait. I wanted to get certain contingencies in place first. Mainly a generator for if we loose power in the winter, so I could run a heater in my room to keep it warm for the hammy. Something I am still saving up for.

What made Bean an impulse buy was seeing her in the Good Pet Store (we do not shop at Petco or Petsmart for hammys in this house) last week. I went in there intending to buy Christmas present's for a friend's pets and that was it. I noticed the enclosure that was marked as holding a female chinese dwarf hamster. Wistful I knew that she'd be gone by the time I was ready to buy a hamster next. Went to check out, made small talk.

"Oh what pets do you have?" the girl behind the counter asks.

"None, this is for a friend's pets, but gosh I want that hamster," I reply.

"Oh yeah, she's been in here for.... almost a year? February or March I think is when she arrived."

A year??????

My heart hurt, I couldn't stand it, I couldn't leave her there. So I have spent the last week rushing to sanitize and set up her enclosure. I brought her home yesterday. She is so skittish. She immediately tried to made an escape when pulling her out of the carrier and has basically been in hiding in her enclosure since she was placed in there. I already suspect she's going to be a ghost hamster, especially after so long in a tiny enclosure at a pet store. At least now I can ensure that she lives a nice life in a 800sq inch enclosure with deep bedding for burrowing. So even if I do not see her much I know she is no longer living in less than the bare minimum.
