rescued some tadpoles- now what ??

Post by CallaTheHam »

hi guys! i don't know if anyone knows about frogs on here, but i figured someone might and i can't find any other frog forums, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i just was at my brother's school's market fair thing- where kids can set up stands and sell things, to practice their entrapaneurship (i spelled that wrong, :'] ) skills. there was a stand full of toys, and there were four jars of tadpoles being sold for $2 like goldfish at a fair. my alarm bells went off and i bought them all- however, i know nothing about frogs ^^'

all i know about them is that they're five days old, and i'm guessing they're northern red-legged frogs- based on the ones commonly around my area and that they match what the tadpoles look like, from what i can tell. they came with a small jar of tiny white flakes/orbs for food, i have no idea what it is.

i have one question for the most part, would it be better to keep them or release them? the people selling them found them at a creek (i do know the name, so i could probably release them back there if needed) as eggs, and took them and hatched them in captivity. would they have a better chance of surviving back at the creek or continuing to keep them in captivity?

if anyone has any other information that i should know as well, it's much much appreciated! also, if there are any good frog forums that someone knows of, please tell- i tried getting to frogforum.net but the site was down, so any others are great!

---

edit to say they've all passed 💔💔 i'm so sad, but i suppose it's a bit inevitable. they're finnicky little creatures </3

Wow, that's so crazy that they were selling tadpoles??? I am not sure of too many frog websites but I saw this and I thought this would be helpful:
https://www.mramphibian.com/how-to-raise-tadpoles/

If I had the time, I would probably release some (if I could find a safe place, like a spot with a large tadpole group) and keep a some to watch grow up. But maybe that's just me.

I hope to see the progress/updates!

Hi there! First, kudos to you for stepping in to help those tadpoles—it’s clear you care deeply. It’s heartbreaking that they didn’t make it, but please don’t be hard on yourself. [url]Tadpoles[/https://welsdom.com/] are indeed very delicate, and their survival can be tricky even in ideal conditions. In the future, for tadpoles taken from the wild, releasing them back into their original environment is usually the best option, as they’re adapted to that ecosystem. Forums like Caudata.org might offer good advice for amphibian enthusiasts if you’re interested in learning more. Your compassion is inspiring—don’t lose that! 💚
