How to keep your hamster cool in hot weather

Post by Spud »

As we head into the Summer months, I thought it would be worth sharing some tips to keep your hamster cool in the hot weather (please share any other ideas below :) )
  • Provide several sources of water and make sure these are topped up when necessary. Don't use refigerated water or ice cubes as this may do more harm than good.
  • Make sure your hamster has lots of deep bedding to burrow in.
  • If possible, keep curtains and blinds partially closed during the day to keep the room cooler.
  • Provide your hamster with ceramic or natural hides, as plastic ones will get very hot. Edit: I've just realised that Spud's been spending more time sitting in her terracotta plant pots recently, I think she's doing it to stay cool. :)
  • Put a tile/slate/ stone in the cage so that your hamster can sit on it to stay cool if they want too.
  • Give your hamster more watery vegetables (in moderation) to help them stay hydrated.
If you think your hamster has heatstroke, take them to a vet ASAP.

I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy the lovely weather- here in the UK we've had a mixture of thunderstorms and sunshine!

Yes, I was upset with myself once when it was hot and I noticed my dwarf didn't have enough water. He had drank it all because of the heat! :( From then on, I kept two bowls of water for him and later gave him a larger dish. My current dwarf has two water bottles (doesn't like bowls), but she's ignored one water bottle entirely.

Huh. No cold water for drinking? I know I put some little ice cubes onto a bowl. My dwarf liked licking it. They melted fast, though.

I leave one or two stone coasters bare in an enclosure. I haven't seen a hamster lie on it yet, but I think it's a good idea. However, during a really bad heat wave, I put in a small cold pack (about 4 inches by 2 inches?) that I kept in the freezer. I waited to see what my hamsters would do with them. The syrian didn't want to touch the cold pack (2 smalls or 1 medium), but he would keep on that side of the enclosure. The dwarf would nap on top of it! :D Then he would lick the water off. :) But I know some hamsters can bite plastics. :(

Something else you can do with cold packs is put them on top of the enclosure so that the cold air falls into the enclosure. I used a handheld temperature checker thing to test that it in fact did lower the temperature by 1 or 2 C for about an hour or so before you need to put the cold pack in the freezer again for several hours (which sucks). There is another problem: the cold packs work best when nothing is underneath them but they'll drip if a bit if nothing is underneath them (some cold packs drip more than others). If you put a piece of paper towel underneath the cold pack, it soaks up the water but the enclosure doesn't seem to cool as much that way but it still does cool! I tried putting a cold pack on a dish towel, but the dish towel seemed to almost completely block most of the cold air from going down into the enclosure.

I might have read on Hamster Hideout that aspen shavings make cooler dens, so I put a bunch of aspen in one side of the den, but my syrian didn't want to go into it. One time, it got so hot that my syrian fainted. I was able to move him to a cooler enclosure in the house.

Keeping curtains and blinds closed is so important when it's hot out! I also learned that light-coloured curtains were better than my black curtains. The best curtains were black-out curtains (slightly thicker and meant to block light) that were light-coloured.

The only other thing I can think to add is that I now put a table fan (that goes back and forth) on the floor near the enclosure to circulate the air. It really does help with the nearby window open a crack. Different houses and rooms will have different heat flow. The window may need to be closed. The air flow may also be different.

Great topic! :)

These are great ideas! Alot of people live in very hot areas. I'm lucky that we haven't needed ACs much yet!

Took me a while to figure what out what AC meant- we don't really have them over here
It's definitely the season of ice lollies though...

Thank you for sharing your experiences and tips on keeping hamsters cool during hot weather. It's clear that you've put a lot of thought and effort into ensuring their comfort and safety. Providing multiple water sources, using cold packs strategically, and adjusting the environment to manage heat are all important considerations for pet owners. Your insights can be helpful for others looking to care for their hamsters during hot weather. And yes, keeping curtains and blinds closed to block out heat is a simple yet effective measure. It's a great topic indeed, and your care for your pets is commendable! 😊

One thing I wanted to add. Before, I mentioned that a cold pack on top of a table cloth on top of a lid will block the cold from getting down into the enclosure. Well, this year, I'm using medium-sized cold packs and folding the table cloths and putting them in the middle of the lid! so that they're not completely blocking the lid. In this way, the cold air from the cold packs will go off to the side and fall down into the enclosure because colder air is denser and therefore falls. It works! :D

So... you take a cold pack (about 3-4 inches across) from the freezer and then put it on top of a folded table cloth (about 4-5 inches across) to soak up water that would drip from the cold pack and put that in the centre of the lid or one one side of the lid. Depending on how hot it is, I will cycle 2 to 4 cold packs with fresh ones from the freezer. It takes like 4-8 hours to freeze a cold pack for use again.

I would also test your lid to see if it can hold the weight of a few pounds. When I've had a soft mesh lid (that sags with weight), I put little wooden boards on the corners and put the cold packs on top of them.

great tips! i always make sure to have extra water sources for my hammie when its hot out. the ceramic hides are a good idea too, mine loves chilling in his terracotta pot. another thing ive done is freeze some of his fav veggies like cucumber slices, he goes crazy for them on a hot day!

Oh, freezing veggies is smart too! :D I'll try to remember that. Probably shouldn't be frozen solid, though? Maybe for an hour? Also, partially unthawed peas! :)

I just wanted to post that air flow is important in the room your hamster is in. We've had some hot days. I've had a fan set up in the hamster room except for at night when I thought just opening the window at night would be enough, but it wasn't. So I did a test and I measured the temperature inside the hamster enclosure with and without the fan going, and it was about 1-2 C (4-5 F?) cooler just when I had a fan on the floor of the room, going back and forth. The fan isn't even blowing air on the tank itself. I didn't think it'd make such a big difference. I might try setting up a small fan on top of the enclosure, either blowing air across the top or even pointing downwards into the enclosure a little.

The only thing I'm not sure of is whether the air just needs to be blown around the room or if there needs to be a window open at least a crack (in the hamster room or in another room?) for the hot air to escape and the temperature to lower. With cold packs placed on the wooden or hard parts of the hamster's lid, there should be some cold air from that. That's also another thing... I've learned that cold packs on the mesh of lid itself may cause the mesh to sink and become deformed.  I've been putting the cold packs on the sides of the lid this year.
