BUGS!!

Post by HamstersAreMyLife »

I found four tiny reddish-brown bugs crawling on Juniper’s homemade platform. I killed them and didn’t see any more so I put it back in the enclosure.
It had been longer than it should have since I cleaned the burrow under the platform and it was stained with urine, but I didn’t see any bugs anywhere else.
Should I be worried?

Well, they are likely coming from outside the cage and just found their way in as opposed to originating from the cage. Do you guys have any plants or dirt in the same room? If so, I would probably put some of that sticky bug paper out and see if it catches anything.

I don't a full clean is needed yet, until you get a swarm or you find out they are coming from the cage itself.

So I'm not the best at looking at pictures but those look like booklice to me. Unfortunately, they can be difficult to get rid of.

You'll probably need to move your hamster into a temporary bin. Then throw out everything you can't soak or bake.

Wood items you can put in the oven at 250 for 30 minutes and that should kill them. Plastic items you can wash with soap and water and if it's a hard plastic you can rinse with boiling water. All the bedding and food will need to be thrown out, cage washed and dried. I would put your food in the freezer just in case.

You may have them in other places besides the cage so I would try to find them and use some diatomaceous earth on any hot spots. Make sure your hamster is out of the room if you need to spray.

Okay, so the wooden items are in the oven.
My parents don’t allow me to put hamster oven in ours so my sister is doing it at a different house, however the oven is small, so only some of the items will be in there.
The rest are in a black trash bag outside, wrapped in foil. (My mom said that should kill them??)
The food, herbs, and sprays are in the freezer.
My parents are gonna pick up some new bedding tonight.
I’m about to move Froggy into a 40 Gallon tank.
If I’m able, he might be able to move back in to his cage tonight, or he may have to stay in the 40 Gallon until tomorrow.
I didn’t find any bugs anywhere else in my room.
Does this all sound alright?

That's what people do with bed bugs I am not sure if it will work on these, but you can try. I've never tried this method though.

Those are some good steps and hopefully by cooking the wooden will help.

I ended up freezing them for two days. It’s bug free and Froggy has moved back in!
Now I have to do Junipers…
I’m not sure how to do hers though because I have never taken her out of her enclosure before, and she doesn’t want out. 😅
