Taco the syrian acting different

Post by Arora »

Hi everyone! I have a couple questions about Taco the Syrian hammy...

Today and yesterday he has been seeming like he wants to find a way out of his 40 gallon home..he's been jumping off things like crazy, he's been rattling his water bottle also for the last few days. I do know he's been getting enough water, I've been watching the water line go down, and the bottle isn't leaking. Plus I see him numerous times drinking.

I just got him a new wheel, since the old one was too small...new size is 12in diameter.

I've also noticed that in the past few days he has been chewing on different items alot more.

I have a spindle wood toy, a vegetable dyed stick, he used to have a hay and carrot kabob. I also recently got him timothy hay. There are three hideouts, he only sleeps or spends time in one. He has a paper towel roll, and toilet paper roll. He has one platform for getting his water, which he's now chewing also.

I've been feeding him 1 tsp once a day, and 3x a week I give him veggies along with the teaspoon.

Could it be boredom, or wanting to explore more?

It does sound like some boredom, is he tame enough for free roaming time in a playpen?

For my Syrians, free roaming was essential to keeping them calm, even when they have the biggest cage.

Also, I would try a partially cracked walnut about once a week for him to chew and break into. Some boredom breakers would be good too. I used to make a ton of those cardboard boredom breakers and put a few seeds in and the next morning, it would be shredded lol

He is veryyy tame lol, I've been letting him go into his playpen since last week. He is always looking upwards and pacing quickly when inside though..like he wants to get out and look around. I have held him and let him look around, and he loves that. Problem is once he's out of the playpen, he's a little Dora the explorer and wants to go everywhere XD

He was actually asking to go into his playpen today, even though it wasn't even close to his time out o.o he held himself extra still while I carried him to the pen! He always a little wiggler

That's wonderful, I'm glad you two are getting along! My Syrians freeroam in a whole room and they still want to escape lol it's just their nature.

Boredom breakers will probably help while he's in his cage.
