What can I DIY for my enclosure?

Post by Birdsarenotreal »

I’m going to be adding a little Syrian hamster to the family soon and I’m so excited HOWEVER I am on a budget. I have a 4’x2’x2’ wooden DIY enclosure and just bought a niteangel wheel. I also will pick up bedding when I can. How many litres does it take to have enough for the cage? I found a 170L bag for $50(which is a complete steal around here- a 60L bag of carefresh is $40) but not sure if it’ll be quite enough. It’s the equivalent of almost 3 of the big bags of carefresh. Anyways I do have a vet fund etc but would like to DIY my hides and stuff. A multichamber, some smaller box hides, tubes? What else?? Platforms I can make with wood but I’ll probably use cardboard for the rest due to the simplicity. Also is it okay to not use herbs? I have allergies to certain flowers and scents so if I can go without it’s better. Also how does one sanitize sprays? My hybrid dwarf (who has neurological issues) got mites from her millet sprays and I don’t want to deal with that again.

That's so exciting, you will have a new addition to your furry family! Personally, as long as there is enough bedding and they can dig, it should be fine. Many people do advise at least 6 inches; however, that seems a bit pricey to me. I usually have a section of the cage that has at least 8, and the rest of the cage a bit less. There are tons of vids online about diy hamster-related things, some popular ones I like are using toilet and paper towel cardboard rolls. As for sanitizing sprays, I am not sure. Maybe popping them in the freezer for a day, then letting them thaw?

It’s great to hear you’re preparing for a new furry friend! For bedding, 6 inches is a common recommendation, but I agree, it can get pricey. A mix of deep bedding in some sections and thinner layers elsewhere works well. DIY hamster toys like toilet paper rolls are awesome—easy to make and cheap! For sanitizing, freezing items to kill bacteria is a smart idea.
