Danger of sisal rope chews

My baby hamster who I got only a month ago died today. He was the sweetest boy and I already miss him dearly. In his nest I found a piece of a chew toy. One of the toys that is pieces of wood, loofah, paper etc strung onto a piece of sisal string. I saw it and checked, the fibres of the string are not short like I expected them to be. They also don’t break from pulling on them. Considering it was very ripped up in his nest I’m assuming that he died from ingestion of a string. I wonder if this is also why my last Syrian died after only a couple of months. My female dwarf has been fine since January save for her neurological issues and aggression. Is it really possible that this is the cause? I’ve been keeping hamsters for 8 years and I feel so bad that I may have caused my baby’s death by unknowingly giving him an unsafe toy. He had safe foods and a warm room and deep paper bedding and cardboard toys and substrates and a nice ($70) wheel. I thought I was doing everything right yet I somehow did this. Please don’t use these toys.
