Unpopular Hamster Opinions

Well, someone has to make this thread! There was lots of great discussion on HHF based on this topic, so hopefully that can continue here. So what are your unpopular opinions? Be polite, and I will go first!

1. Waking up your hamster isn’t inherently bad
2. Victoria Raechel is a great source, but there are SO many more knowledgeable people
3. Rex hamsters (Syrian) aren’t cute… I’m really sorry… still love them though ofc!
4. Chinese hamsters are the best species
5. Melanistic/black European hamsters need to be shared more, they are so cool!

I think that naturalist cages are better than non naturalist cages, as they provide more usage for instincts!

In my opinion, waking up your hamster is unescessary disturbing for the hamster, besides if its an emergency, going to the vet, or you need to clean the cage, and have to wake them up. I don't think its "dangerous" for them, but still not great to do

I think victoria raechel is simple, and that is what makes it nice to listen to. Like if you just want to care better about your hamster, but not be too complicated, i think it's good because she explains in an easy way, with just enough details. But I'm sure there are alot of other great ones, or maybe better ! Depends on what you prefer

I think that cataracts aren’t something to panic really about. Yes, it’s not fun the fact that they can see as well as they used to be, but it’s not the end of the world. It’s better than being blind.

I think hamsters should be a lot more expensive than 12 dollars.
Or shouldn't be put on "sale" at the pet store.

Ok, hopefully I’m quoting this right, never really used forums before lol.

So I have absolutely nothing against Victoria Raechel, and I really admire what she’s done for the community. My problem is when people start only taking her advice, and when in an argument they’ll use “well Victoria Raechel said”, as if she is the ultimate hamster owner, when I can list many more knowledgeable people.

For waking them up, the reason why I think it is not always bad, is because hamsters are crepuscular/nocturnal, and so we don’t see them very often. Some will also begin avoiding lights. I think it’s important to get your hamster used to people, as it will make their lives much easier and it is also easier for you to check up on them and know what is and isn’t normal. Now, I don’t agree with waking them up in the middle of the day, but if it is later in the night like 9:30, I don’t see much of a problem, especially since there’s a good chance they are already awake in their burrows.

Definitely! Including things like deep substrate, different textures, forage, etc, is really beneficial, and as a bonus it’s more fun to watch your hamster in that type of environment
