Meet my cow, Daisy (no not actually a cow)
I got a new hamster yesterday, October 27th.
She’s a hybrid dwarf named Daisy!
She’s about 4 months old and I got her from petsmart, as there was no other options available to me (I promise you guys I checked everything for months- dwarf hamsters aren’t super common around here at the moment)

Re: Choosing a healthy hamster without handling it
Yep it’s a crochet strawberry hide that I ordered off Etsy. My old hamster never chewed it but I can take it out if this hamster seems to chew? Should I take it out just in case?
You could keep an eye on it, but you'd have to check the bottom frequently since the damage may not show from the ...

Re: Choosing a healthy hamster without handling it
You can't tell when female dwarfs are in heat by odor. They can be less smelly than the males.
Is that a crocheted fruit? You might want to save that for playtime, so you can remove it when it starts to come apart. Hamsters wreck soft items, and loose yarn can pose a hazard.
I would limit the ...

My previous male dwarf didn’t smell bad at all except for when he had an ...

Re: Choosing a healthy hamster without handling it
It's really hard to tell whether hamsters are healthy or not, even if you do handle them briefly. This is because they are prey animals, and try and hide all signs of illnesses, especially when they're stressed.
I would always recommend going to a reputable rescue, if possible, as they are more ...

Choosing a healthy hamster without handling it
I found a hamster to get, however she is very untame and y Un-handleable at the moment. I obviously want to make sure she’s healthy before I bring her home, as she is from a pet shop.. how can I see if she’s healthy? I know she’s eating as she is quite fat.. she will be on a healthier diet once I ...

Re: Where to get a hamster??
Is there a PetFinder for Canada?
None that are widely known of that include small animals unfortunately
Then I would ask the local pet stores when they might be getting some. They might just order on a rotation.
I asked today! They said they should get some in from a breeder within ...

Re: Where to get a hamster??
I can’t find any hamster’s available of the species that I am looking for. In my province, there are only two dwarf hybrid hamsters available and they are like 3 hours drive away. I’ve been to 2 pet stores as well and haven’t seen ANY. They used to be everywhere but now they’re virtually ...
