Hammy chewing hole in cage?!

Post by AngelTheHam »

Hello everyone! My hammy is a female Syrian hamster named angel. She is 1 year and a few months old. Angel likes to chew a lot, so I’ve been trying to get her things to chew on. When I got a new hide (open bottom) and I put it in on a corner, Angel decided to rip off the painters tape (the cage had plexiglass on top of the wood on the bottom and the manual tells you to put painters tape over the cracks) and chew. She chewed a small sliver of the wood. It didn’t go all the way through, but I still was not happy.
It is a 300 dollar cage that I got for her when she was maybe 9 months old. It is the Niteangel Oblique cage with a little over 1000 sq. Inches of floor space.
I give her many options to chew on, multiple substrates, sprays, platforms, and hides. Yet she decides to chew on the cage. I also have been taking her out daily in her new playpen for a few minutes. I scatter food, sit in there with her, and set out a lot of different toys and some hides and tunnels (and her wheel).
I put the painters tape back on, and I moved that open bottom hide to where there is no painters tape underneath. It is almost in the middle of the cage. I added a lot more bedding to that corner where she chewed, and covered the area in a tunnel, sprays, and forage mix. Even though I took away the hide where her burrow was, she still decided to dig down to the bottom of her cage where the small sliver of wood was missing. I will check on it in the morning, but for now I will sleep while simultaneously thinking of options on what to do.
I will be making more custom boredom breakers soon, as well as adding more sprays and toys and whatever to try to get her to stop chewing that.
Is there anything you guys would suggest? I’m concerned about Angel escaping and the 300 dollar cage getting a hole in it. It’s pretty new, and it is good quality! I had been planning on using it for my future hamster too, but I can’t if there is a hole in it. Ideas? :o

Sorry for the bad quality picture, it was the best I could do with the compressor. In the very back of the picture, (^that way) that is where the burrow is. You can tell by the bedding all proofed up. I usually compact it down a decent amount or she is absolutely swallowed.
