Food mix: Versele-Laga Crispy Muesli Hamsters & Co (excited & ate some of it)

Post by hamsworth »

I bought Versele-Laga Crispy Muesli Hamsters & Co from Petland. It says "online only", but I found it in the store. It's also listed on PetValu, but I've never seen it in a store.

Listed Prices
PetValu: $8.99 CAD for 1 kg / 2.2 pounds. (November 2024.)
Petland: $9.97 CAD for 1 kg / 2.2 pounds. (November 2024.)
Petland: $25.97 CAD for 2.75 kg / 6.06 pounds. (November 2024.)

I think it's a decent second food to give your hamster. Why a supplementary food? Well, because it's marketed as a food for hamsters, mice, rats, and gerbils, it probably includes things that not all of those critters will eat. However, despite not eating everything from it, my Syrian was very interested in it and would always check it out. It seems to have different stuff than the other good dry mixes that you can find in pet stores.

It's also a surprise to me how few ingredients it has! It does have a list of nutritional additives, but even with that, it's not nearly as long as other store mixes! Huh... but I guess it doesn't list individual things out. It just says "cereals" or "nuts" or "minerals".

I personally wouldn't reccomend anything meant for more than 2 animals, but as a treat, I think it'll be okay. It has very very few ingredients. If you are looking for supplements, I would recommend looking into natural herbs! They have a lot of vitamins and healthy things that hamsters eat in the wild!

Edit: looking at the ingredients online, it's VERY vague! I would not feed this. "Cereals" and "seeds" could include ANYTHING. I would reccomend trying Higgins Sunburst with freeze-dried chicken. It is the same price, and is the best on the market. This food looks like it's made of unhealthy ingredients that you don't even know what they are. Once again, I'd reccomend looking into natural supplements, like herbs.
No hamsters currently although I love them so much! ♡

Natural herbs? Do have a brand you buy? I've tried a botanical hay mix that they weren't interested in because... hamsters don't really like hay. I also have some dried niteangel flowers, but that's not herbs.

Yeah, you're right. I'm just happy he was excited for it. The lack of specifying the ingredients is a little troubling.

For Higgins Sunburst, I've found Higgins Gourmet Blend at Petland but nothing else. I also think I've seen Higgins Sunburst Garden. Neither contain chicken, though. What is it you buy?

I've got a few more bags of store brand food mixes to post about. I thought this was one of the better ones. I'll also try to remember to post what I currently have. Going to get another hammy in a few weeks. :)

I get my chicken just in a 1 ingredient (chicken breast) cat treat. Purebites is the most common, but other brands are the same. 🙂

For herbs id reccomend Rosewood nature's salad, or some mix on etsy. It doesn't have to be dedicated for hamsters, just that it's one ingredent or safe ingredients. Victoria raechel has a video on what herbs are safe and have what benefits, and i think that hamster clubhouse has one too.

Yay about another hammy! I always love getting hammies 🩷 what species are you looking for?

Okay, I see PureBites at PetValu, Petland, and Petsmart, so it's probably everywhere! :) What I normally do is cook non-seasoned chicken (by steaming or boiling) without adding anything like salt or oil and then I give the hamster a tiny piece of it.

I can't see Rosewood nature's salad in any stores, but I do have a little Rosewood block with a spoonful of herbs on it. I'll look up more about herbs. :) I'll also watch her video on herbs.

I'm thinking of getting a dwarf! :D But if I end up with the plainest of Syrian hamsters, that's fine too.
