Live plants inside a hamster cage
Some people enjoy having a more naturalistic hamster cage including the use of growing plants within the cage. Here are some plants that are safe and unsafe.
Warning: Only use organically grown plants for your hamster cage. Regular potting soil contains fertilizers and chemicals that would be toxic for your hamster. Only use organically grown seeds, sometimes the seeds themselves have also been treated with chemicals or fertilizers.
Plants that are safe to have growing within your cage:
Basil (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
Chamomile
Chicory
Clover
Cornflowers
Daisies
Dandelions
Dill (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
Grasses such as Wheat grass, Meadow grass
Garden Cress (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
Lemon balm
Marigolds
Mint
Oregano (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
Parsley
Pea Plant (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
Peppermint
Ribwort
Rosemary (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
Spearmint
*Spider plants
Thyme (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
*Spider plant seeds are potentially toxic to hamsters so removing any budding seeds is a good idea. (added by ForgetfulBreeze)
**Plants that are safe but grow too tall for most cages are:
Sunflower, Alfalfa, Wheat, Chickweed
Unsafe plants to have growing your cage are:
Aloe Vera – Please note that using the gel from the Aloe plant itself on irritated skin is perfectly fine but the leaves are not good for hamsters to eat.
Amaryllis
Bamboo
Bluebell
Buttercup
Chrysanthemum
Elder
Ivy
Lilies
Ragwort
Tulips
This is not a complete list of plants obviously and if anyone has been able to safely keep a different plant within their cage, let me know and I will update the list w/credit.

Here's a few more safe ones:
Sunflower (usually too tall for the cage)
Dill
Basil
Garden Cress
Thyme
Cilantro
Oregano
Rosemary
Pea Plant
Alfalfa (sprouts are safe, but it can grow to over 1 meter tall)
Wheat (sprouts are safe, but is too tall for the cage)
Chickweed ( can grow up to one foot but usually is shorter)
For the unsafe ones, I believe that spider plant seeds are toxic so maybe you could mention cutting them off so your hamster cannot reach them.

Re: Live plants inside a hamster cage
I've made the updates, I'm kind of on the fence about cilantro, I've read some sources that say it's safe in moderation but it's in the same family as parsley which really even though it's "safe' can have negative effects some animals including allergic reactions, definitely not to be given to pregnant hamsters, etc.ForgetfulBreeze wrote: Sun Aug 21, 2022 8:34 am Here's a few more safe ones:

Thoughts anyone?

I personally would remove it, as it being listed as “safe” could be taken the wrong way and I think warrants it’s own article:)

Would plants that are cat and dog safe also be safe for hamsters? Thinking about peperomia and haworthia

Well the most common types white clover (they produce white flowers) and red clover (which produce red flowers, though I think they look more like purple flowers to me haha) are both of those are safe and common in the US and UK.pichu_pals wrote: Sun Apr 28, 2024 2:46 am Hi! I have given my hamster white clover from my yard to no ill effects. We don't spray any chemicals on our yard.

Always use organically grown plants (no chemical fertilizers or pesticides). Regular potting soil or treated seeds can be toxic.
Safe plants (growing inside):
Basil (thanks to ForgetfulBreeze)
Wheatgrass, millet, parsley, coriander, and dandelion are also popular

Re: Live plants inside a hamster cage
wheatgrass has been the easy win in my setup, grows fast and mine actually forages in it instead of just flattening it like she does with everything else. never trusted store soil enough to risk it so i went with organic seed starter and it turned out fine.perets1 wrote: Many owners love naturalistic cages with live plants – but safety first!

Funny enough, the same “keep the setup clean and uncomplicated” rule works well in a GoldenPlay Casino https://goldenplay-france.com/ too, where a straightforward mix of games and slots is usually more enjoyable than an overloaded mess.
